Railway lines and crossings

What KiwiRail is responsible for
KiwiRail is responsible for barrier arms, lights, bells and signage. It also maintains roads surfaces within five metres of the railway, and is responsible for providing adequate view lines so that people can see approaching trains.

What Council is responsible for
Horowhenua District Council is responsible for road markings at level crossings and for maintaining the surface of the road leading up to the crossing. Council is also responsible for maintaining paths and any fencing at standalone pedestrian crossings and advance warning signs.
