What can go into your Council recycling wheelie bins

Do you accept the challenge? All waste, even recycled materials, will have an impact on our environment. Let’s produce as little rubbish as possible. This “What Goes Where” for rubbish and recycling will help you make sure that your household waste products end up where they need to.

What should go in to your Council green recycling wheelie bin 

These items can go in your Horowhenua District Council Recycling Wheelie Bin (please make sure all items are empty and clean):

• Number 1 plastics: Soft drink, juice & water bottles
• Number 2 plastics: Milk, bathroom & laundry products bottles
• Number 5 plastics: Large yoghurt and ice cream tubs, margarine/ butter tubs, some takeaway containers
• Aluminium cans
• Steel food tins and cans (remove lids)
• Cardboard (No greasy, dirty, wet or coated in plastic: eg takeaway coffee cup)
• Paper / Newspaper / Junk mail
• Meat trays as long as they are clean and without plastic wrapping

Don't forget to wash and remove lids. Non-recyclable materials go in your council bag or waste bin. Getting it wrong could mean that your wheelie bin is not emptied as the contents might endanger staff, break machinery or contaminate other recyclables causing them to be disposed of in a landfill.

Please do not put the following in your Council green recycling wheelie bin:

• Cardboard that is wet, has food stuck to it, or is coated (such as takeaway coffee cups) cannot be recycled.  
• Crushed aluminium drink cans
• Dirty or contaminated items
• Number 3,4,6 &7 plastics
• Plastic bottle Lids
• Soft plastics
• Spray cans / Metal aerosol cans

putting these items into your wheelie bin could mean that it is not emptied as the contents might endanger staff, break machinery or contaminate other recyclables causing them to be disposed of in a landfill.

Recycling Tips

Waste Tip - Only glass bottles and jars go into your recycling crate

Only glass bottles and jars go into your recycling crate.
Glass gets sorted by hand so please wrap broken glass and put it in with your general waste to avoid health and safety issues.

Waste Tip - Place items loose in your recycling bin

Items placed inside bags or coverings (such as plastic) cannot be accepted.

Waste Tip - Pizza Boxes

Clean pizza boxes without any food scraps can go straight into the recycling bin. If one side has stuck on food, you can tear off that part and place it in your Horowhenua District Council rubbish bag.
