Winter 2024

A time for reflection, Matariki rises in midwinter heralding the start of a new year.

In this edition of Puāwai we share ways you can celebrate this special time and share a Sweet az Pai Kūmara & Ārani (Orange) Cake recipe which could soon become Matariki tradition for you and your whānau.

We meet shining stars in our community, Unison Community Choir and Sonja Hart, who are lighting Horowhenua up with their musical and artistic talents.

Get some gardening tips by planting according to Maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar, and enjoy new opportunities and friendships by choosing a role available through Volunteer Central.

Stay safe on the road during the winter season with tips from Bernie on the Beat and learn about the idyllic picnics focused on sharing food with family once held at Manawatū heads in the early 1900s, as you make Matariki memories with yours.

As we set our intentions for the year ahead during Matariki, we also explore the Long Term Plan 2024-44 and how this helps shape our future.

Have a wonderful winter Horowhenua.

Autumn 2024

As we prepare to commemorate New Zealanders killed in war and honour returned and serving servicemen and women during ANZAC Day, we also acknowledge those serving our community today.

In this edition of Puāwai we share the importance of the modern-day New Zealand Defence Force and look at how they are protecting and serving our communities in 2024.

Continuing the military theme, our Library Information Research & Local History Team Lead imagines veteran Charles James Nelson’s return to Foxton following the war, and we shine a light on modern day heroes - our brave and selfless local Volunteer Firefighters.

For history buffs, we list our top six places to visit in Horowhenua to learn about days past.

While we celebrate those leading people through difficult times we also explore the challenging choices ahead of us as we consult on our Long Term Plan.

As we look to the future, we celebrate a new era of the Foxton Pools, which has been refreshed and is now open year-round for the community to enjoy, and we list volunteering opportunities to begin a new chapter in your life.

Have an awesome Autumn Horowhenua.

Summer 2023-24

Delight your senses with the sights, sounds and tastes of Horowhenua. We’ve listed our five favourite ways to spend summer days in the district and share details on an exciting new facility that opened this December.

In this Puāwai we explore ways to reduce waste and embrace sustainability. There are some especially environmentally friendly and community spirited volunteers at the Levin Repair Café. We stopped by to see the good they are doing in the community and how they are saving hundreds of kilograms of items going to landfill.

As the saying goes ‘charity begins at home’; Gardening with Simon shares tips on how to conserve water in your backyard and offers some suggestions on what to plant while the summer sun shines.

Summer is the best time for BBQs and shared meals with loved ones. Maybe you’re planning a picnic or a banquet for your best friends, have some fresh fish caught from one of our beaches, or have an abundance of vegetables thanks to previous Gardening with Simon articles? Our Local History Team Lead looks into food sustainability tips shared years ago that are still relevant today, and our friends from Love Food, Hate Waste share one of their favourite recipes to use Christmas leftovers.

Whether you’re travelling in or out of the district, Sergeant Bernie O’Brien also shares some reminders to keep yourself safe on the road.

Have a stunning summer Horowhenua.
