Emergency Mobile Alert Test
Published on May 19, 2023
A nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert System test is taking place on Sunday 28 May 2023, between 6pm and 7pm.
While you can expect to hear an alarm from your cellphone, there is no need to be alarmed. The test is to check Civil Defence systems, the cell towers and your phone’s ability to receive an Emergency Mobile Alert, so it will perform as it should in an emergency.
The system works on geo-targeting so there is no need to download any special app to receive emergency alerts. As the Emergency Mobile Alert is about keeping you safe, you won’t be able to opt-out. If you are driving when you receive the alert, please pull over safely before reading it.
Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. You should always be prepared. Visit getready.govt.nz for advice around making a plan before a disaster strikes.
