What is HITS all about?
HITS will set out the future transport vision for Horowhenua and provide a principles-based planning framework to coordinate the delivery of a suite of Transport Action Plans across the district, over the next 30 years.
HITS will be an integrated, multi-modal transport strategy for the district to achieve sustainable transport outcomes. It will include an overarching strategic vision and principles that will be used to guide and inform transport planning, infrastructure investment and delivery over the next 30 years. It will align with the Government’s Policy Statement on Land Transport and inform planning for NZTA’s proposed Ōtaki to North of Levin Expressway.
What has been done so far?
Earlier this year, Council consulted with our community on transport issues, ideas and options. More than 500 people took part in our survey. We held discussions with community groups, the shared pathways network reference group, met with iwi, and key transport groups and representatives. We also met with the transport managers of our neighbouring Councils and made representations to the Horizons and Greater Wellington Regional Transport Committees and NZTA.
What happens next?
Once we have gathered and analysed feedback, Council Officers will prepare the Draft HITS that will go to Council for adoption in the New Year. We will also propose Transport Projects to be included in the next Long Term Plan 2021-2041.
