No, currently the Horowhenua Companion Card can only be used within the Horowhenua District Council boundaries.

But watch this space.

Palmerston North City Council already have a Companion Card and Manawatū Regional Council are also working on launching a Companion Card. It is the aim for all three Councils to, in the future, remove the boundaries so the Companion Card can be used across all three regions.

If you have a favourite venue/activity that you frequent a lot and they are not participating in the Companion Card initiative you can do one of the following:

  • Encourage them to become a participating venue and to contact Horowhenua District Council.
  • Email community@horowhenua.govt.nz with the venue/activity you would like to become a participating venue and the Community Development Team will follow it up.

The card will not be given for conditions such as allergic reactions, falls or medical emergencies.

Diagnosis of a condition or impairment does not automatically qualify you to receive a card unless it affects you permanently.

Attendant Companion Support may be provided by a friend, a family member or a paid carer. Attendant Companion Support includes significant assistance with mobility, communication, self-care or learning, where the use of aids, equipment or alternative strategies does not enable the person to carry out these tasks.

Attendant Companion Support does not include providing reassurance or encouragement nor can it be for infrequent or unexpected events or medical emergencies.
