Certificates of Recognition 2024

Since the inception of the Civic Honours Awards in 1995, many citizens of the Horowhenua have been recognised for their exceptional dedication and commitment to community groups, clubs, and committees.

Volunteers come from all backgrounds and are inspired to give their time for various reasons—whether addressing a pressing community need, staying active, building connections, or fostering a sense of belonging. Through their efforts, volunteers build networks of support and friendship that extend beyond their immediate contributions.

In a world that can sometimes feel challenging, volunteering offers a meaningful way for people to be part of the solution. It empowers us to take action, proving that each individual has the power to create positive change and shape a better future for our community.

Tonight, we honour volunteers who have devoted countless hours—and in many cases, decades—of service to their communities. As a member of the selection committee, I can attest to the impressive nominations we received this year, making the selection process both inspiring and challenging at the same time.

I’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted nominations and letters of support for these remarkable individuals.

Certificates of Recognition were presented to:

Alison Lines

We are delighted to present a Certificate of Recognition to Alison Lines who was nominated by the St. Mary’s Anglican Parish, in recognition of her lifelong service to music and the community of Horowhenua.

Alison moved to Levin from Tokomaru Bay as a child, where her musical talents blossomed. She began studying piano with the Nuns at St. Joseph’s Convent and later learned the organ at St. Mary’s Church. Her musical gifts and dedication have made her a central figure at St. Mary’s, where she has generously shared her talents, playing for services, weddings, and funerals, even while balancing family life and work on her family’s berry farm. In the 1970s, she composed music for a Folk Mass to engage younger congregants—music still cherished by the congregation today.

Alison’s contributions extend beyond the church. She has been an invaluable member of the Levin Music Society, earning a Life Membership for her exceptional dedication as a pianist, accompanist, and performer. Alison has always been ready to support vocalists and choirs, often preparing complex pieces and practicing tirelessly to perfect performances. Known for her willingness to tackle any piece, she has brought countless memorable moments to audiences. Even at 93, she continues to serve on the society’s committee, organising concerts and providing guidance.

For over 25 years, Alison also played for the “Concordia” Choir, accompanying them at events throughout the community. Her warmth and commitment have deeply touched everyone she has worked with. Alison's tireless dedication, quiet generosity, and passion for music make her a true treasure and a deserving recipient of this Award.

Congratulations Alison, and on behalf of the community, we thank you for your service.

Carolyn Cordery

Carolyn began volunteering at Levin Riding for the Disabled in early 2013, and from day one, she showed remarkable dedication to both the riders and horses. Initially serving as Duty Manager under Kaye Emeny, Carolyn also joined the committee as Health and Safety Officer and contributed to enhancing the facility at Speldhurst.

Carolyn’s contributions were invaluable during the major move from Speldhurst to Mako Mako Road. She helped pack, transport, and organise tons of equipment, transforming the new space into a welcoming, functional site. Carolyn spent countless hours painting stable doors, setting up furniture, and working on the grounds, even repairing electrics and adding paths. She crafted outdoor furniture, painted rocks, and planted gardens—all while using her own tools and often funding supplies from her own pocket. Her famous home baking was a special treat for volunteers, bringing joy and energy to the team.

Volunteers affectionately referred to the clubrooms as “Carolyn’s Cottage” due to her constant presence and efforts. Her extensive work included donating an equipment shed, laying pathways, and carefully tending to plants around the grounds. Her recent initiative, the new Sensory Trail, has introduced a range of activities that have quickly become favourites among the riders.

Beyond these efforts, Carolyn has remained involved in daily horse care and even provided care for five ponies when the RDA had no land. Remarkably, she has done all this while also caring for her husband. Carolyn’s unwavering commitment and passion have left an indelible mark on Levin RDA and its community.

Congratulations and thank you Carolyn, for your extraordinary contributions and selfless dedication.

Hetty Gardner

It is a privilege to recognise Hetty Gardner with a Certificate of Recognition.

A dedicated volunteer, Hetty is truly an unsung hero in our community, known for her quiet kindness and generosity.

Hetty was a devoted farmer’s wife and homemaker, putting her energy into bringing up her family and supporting her husband. In later years, Hetty began devoting her time to supporting others in the community. She never visits anyone without homemade treats—pikelets, muffins, seasonal jam, or eggs. Her large garden yields fresh produce that she freely shares with friends and neighbours. Beyond her garden, Hetty enriches the lives of elderly friends by taking them out for coffee or lunch, helping with shopping, or inviting them to her home, bringing warmth and companionship to their day.

Each week, Hetty brings seating and refreshments for the local Wednesday walking group, and she’s an avid supporter of the Hospice Shop, knitting bags of children’s clothing to donate each month. She also provided home-based care for children for years, treating each child with dedication, taking them to the park and library, and creating an environment of love and learning.

As a respected member of the Poroutawhao community, Hetty served on the PTA, the Poroutawhao Hall Society, and the Country Women’s Institute. She received a 40-year service badge in 2011, recognising her quiet but impactful dedication. In Levin, she’s known for her support of the local Garden Club, where she helps organise meetings, flower shows, and events with her thoughtful insights and gentle leadership.

Hetty is a truly remarkable, community-minded person, who, without seeking recognition, quietly uplifts those around her. Her selfless spirit, kindness, and humility make her a deserving candidate for this award. Congratulations Hetty.
